The Catholic Church Throughout Medieval Europe:
The Catholic Church throughout Medieval Europe was a far more influential force, having much more power and authority in society then it does today. The manipulation of superstitions and fears (particularly the fear of not making it into Heaven) were used by the Church to scare people into becoming believers and taking part in religious acts. The tax (known as tithes) that was enforced by the Catholic Church was the reason this religion was wealthy and had so much money. Tithes were when you paid 10% of your yearly earnings to the Church whether it be through money or produce. Even though many people would struggle to pay such taxes the fear that was associated with them would cause some to go bankrupt before not meeting ends, despite the difficulties it would cause them. Cathedrals are a good example of how much money the Catholic Church actually had, the sheer size of these buildings were reminders to all that came within miles of them, just how much power the Church possessed.
